The Environmental Health Officers Registration Council of Nigeria is established by Act 11 of 2002 to regulate the practice of Environmental Health profession in Nigeria. Sections 1 (1) (a) and ( c) and 12 of the Act empowers the Council to “approve course of training which is intended for persons seeking to become members of the profession”. Council in her resolution No. CR/12/05 of 12th July 2007, approved that Persons with First Degree and Masters Degrees in Environmental Health Related Fields such as in Chemistry, Biochemistry, Biological sciences, Food Science and Technology, Environmental Management, Environmental Science and Technology, and Health Promotion/Education who graduated before 2004 and seeking to become Environmental Health Officers would register and take tutorial with accredited Learning Centres for a minimum of 9 months.
On completion of the programme, such learners shall be presented by the Learning Centre to the Council and shall be registered for the Council annual Certification Examinations which holds in November of every year. Thereafter, learners who are successful in the examination shall then be registered as Environmental Health Officers by the Council.
The Council is aware of the fact that the Environment plays a vital role in man’s health and that Environmental Health is dynamic and its control forms the bedrock on which an efficient public health system can be guaranteed. The need to evolve holistic approach to tackle emerging environmental health problems and the growing interest of some Nigeria graduates to practice environmental health profession informed Council decision in accordance with the provision of relevant sections of the Act, to approve the admission of the person with specific educational background to be trained and admitted into the profession.
Therefore, the accredited Learning Centres are expected to guide the learners and to provide both theoretical and practical skills to enable the learner acquire skills and knowledge necessary to enable them practice as Environmental Health Officer.
